William Johnson Windlow 1870 – 1952

William Johnson Windlow was born in 1871 in Winlaton, County Durham.

I had been searching for a number of years for his birth registration, and it was quite by chance that I decided to look at registrations for Johnson.

In August 2008, I found it!

His birth certificate records him as William Windlow Johnson, son of Catherine Johnson.

As his father's name was missing and his mother was Catherine Johnson it can only mean that he was illegitimate.

By inference, one can assume that his father would have been a Windlow.

However, subsequent children were registered as children of Joseph Windlow and Catherine Johnson but I have not found a marriage certificate for Joseph and Catherine.

This is shown in the 1881 census, William is recorded as living with parents, Joseph and Catherine Windlow, at 12 Byker Street, Longbenton, Northumberland, England.

In the census of 1891, he is a lodger aged 21 years living in South Moor, Durham – occupation – a general labourer

William married Jane Crumpton in 1900, Houghton le Spring.  He was recorded as a coal miner.

They have 4 children:

William born in 1900, but he died in 1919 aged 18 years – the cause of death was Lobar Pneumonia – probably due to the Spanish influenza outbreak.

Eli, born in 1902.

Joseph born in 1904.

Jessica Crumpton Windlow, born 1906.

William died on 17 January 1952 at Middlesborough Municipal Hospital.

He was a retired General Labourer living at 38 East Street, Middlesborough.

The cause of death was Congestive Cardiac Failure.

The informant was P Rowbotham – Niece, of 24 Aske Road, Redcar.
