1861 Census records their growing family living in Wednesbury: Samuel Phipps aged 4 years; William Phipps aged  2 years and Sarah J Phipps 1 Month old.

Alfred is a Railway Wheel Smith.

1871 Census records Alfred and his family are living at 172 North Hampton Lane, Darlaston.

Both he and his sons, Samuel and William, are working as Railway Wheel Smiths. Daughters, Mary aged 3 years and Matilda aged 7 years and 1-year-old Eliza are recorded on this census.

1881 Census Alfred is recorded as a Striker For Blacksmith; living at 3 Street 3 House Foster Street, Wednesbury, West Bromwich.

Son, Edward is recorded on this census, b. 1874 at Wednesbury.

1891 Census – Alfred aged 58; Sarah aged 53; Mary (Phipps) Day aged 23 years old married daughter; Fred Day aged 25, Son in Law and Son, Edward aged 16 years.

1901 Census – Alfred, Sarah and their youngest son, Edward, are living in lodgings at 18 Camp Street, Wednesbury.
